W. Newton Long Award for the Advancement of Midwifery

The W. Newton Long Award for the Advancement of Midwifery is dedicated to honoring the legacy of Dr. W. Newton Long, a renown OB/GYN who was a longtime supporter and advocate for midwives, midwifery practice, and midwifery research. 


Dr. Long worked with midwives in various settings, including the Indian Health Service, Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. 


The purpose of this award is to provide funding for projects or activities that contribute to the advancement of midwifery. These initiatives should focus on addressing one or more of the following areas:


  1. Enhancing clinical midwifery skills.
  2. Advancing midwifery through research.
  3. Disseminating midwifery research findings.
  4. Promoting the professional development of midwifery.
  5. Delivering presentations at medical or midwifery conferences.
  6. Establishing new midwifery practices or services.
  7. Studying various aspects of midwifery practice in the United States and abroad.


ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:


  • Be a CNM or CM
  • Be a member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM)
